Micrometer Film Applicator QPI‑MAFA Series – Application:

ASTM Test Method (ASTM D823 – Standard Practices for Producing Films of Uniform Thickness of Paint, Varnish, and Related Products)

Purpose

The ASTM D823 procedure defines how to produce uniform wet films of coatings for laboratory evaluation. It ensures repeatable film thickness and surface quality for tests such as gloss, adhesion, hardness, and drying time.

Apparatus

  • Micrometer Film Applicator (QPI‑MAFA Series) — precision stainless‑steel applicator with analog or digital micrometer heads for adjustable gap control.

  • Test substrate — glass, metal, or sealed paper panels cleaned and prepared according to coating type.

  • Drawdown surface — level, vibration‑free bench or automatic film applicator platform.

Procedure

  1. Preparation

    • Mix coating thoroughly and condition to test temperature (typically 23 ± 2 °C).

    • Clean substrate with solvent or lint‑free cloth.

  2. Gap Adjustment

    • Set micrometer heads to the desired film thickness (e.g., 50 µm, 100 µm, 150 µm).

    • Verify parallel alignment of the blade using calibration blocks.

  3. Film Application

    • Deposit a measured amount of coating in front of the blade.

    • Draw the applicator smoothly across the substrate at a constant speed (150–300 mm/s).

    • Avoid vibration or jerking motion.

  4. Drying and Evaluation

    • Allow the film to level and dry under controlled conditions.

    • Measure wet and dry film thickness using a calibrated gauge.

Purpose
