Qualtech Products Industry Digital Konig Persoz Pendulum Hardness Tester is a precision coating test instrument to evaluate the hardness of coated samples.
This professional Digital Pendulum Hardness Tester is designed to operate a Konig Pendulum or a Persoz Pendulum which is mounted on two stainless steel balls resting on a coated test panel according to the Konig Test Method and the Persoz Test Method offering a design based on international testing standards.

To perform a Pendulum Hardness Test the Konig Pendulum or the Persoz Pendulum is placed on the coated surface of the sample and is set into oscillation. The stainless steel balls of the Konig Pendulum or Persoz Pendulum move on the surface of the coated sample and put pressure on the coating. Depending on the elasticity and hardness of the coating the damping will be stronger or weaker. During the Pendulum Hardness Test this Digital Pendulum Hardness Tester automatically counts with two precision photo sensors the number of completed oscillations of the Konig Pendulum or the Persoz Pendulum based on the selected Pendulum Hardness Test Method and conveniently displays the number of recorded counts on the large digital LCD display with backlight for comfortable and easy reading of test values under different light conditions.

This precision Digital Pendulum Hardness Tester is designed in accordance with the Pendulum Hardness Test Method, the amplitude of the Konig Pendulum or Persoz Pendulum decreases less quickly the harder the surface of the tested coated sample is and leads to longer damping times of the coated sample.

The time for the oscillation amplitude to decrease by an amount specified in international testing standards is measured, shorter damping times indicate softer coatings.

This Digital Pendulum Hardness Tester is designed and engineered in accordance with international testing standards ASTM D4366 (ASTM D4366-95 Standard Test Methods for Hardness of Organic Coatings by Pendulum Damping Tests (Withdrawn 2003)), BS3900 E5, ISO 1522, DIN 53 157, SNV 37 112, NFT 30 016, NBN T22-105.

To perform a Pendulum Hardness Test two different types of test procedures are applicable known as the Konig Pendulum Hardness Test and the Persoz Pendulum Hardness Test.
The main test principles of the Konig and Persoz Test Method are very similar as both coating test methods rely on the amplitude of the oscillation of a pendulum being placed on the coated surface of a sample, however these two coating test principles differ in dimensions and shape, weight, oscillation time and the amplitude of the oscillation. During the Konig Hardness Test the time for the amplitude of the pendulum to decrease from 6° to 3° is measured whilst during the Persoz Pendulum Hardness Test the time for the amplitude of the pendulum to decrease from 12° to 4° is relevant.

Results obtained through a Konig Pendulum Hardness Test or a Persoz Pendulum Hardness test can only be put in relation with the same coating hardness test method, because the interaction between the pendulum and the coated surface of the sample is very complex reflecting elastic and viscoelastic properties. To put test results of a Konig Test into relation with test results of a Persoz test is impossible and vice versa, therefore it is suggested to always select one Pendulum Hardness Test Method for a specific test series. The Pendulum Hardness Test reflects the sensitivity of physical properties of a coating to its environment, therefore a test series should always be performed under controlled conditions, e.g. same temperature and relative humidity, same film thickness, absence of drafts, same surface smoothness, absence of vibration, absence of dust.
