Freeness is a quantitative measure of the Drainage Behavior of a diluted Pulp Suspension containing 3 g of absolutely dry fiber per 1 L of water. It reflects two critical fiber characteristics:

  • Surface condition and
  • Degree of fiber swelling

Because drainage behavior is sensitive to process variables, freeness results depend strongly on pulp preparation, temperature and water quality.

Y Canadian Standard Freeness (CSF) method evaluates the Drainage Performance of a Pulp Suspension at a controlled concentration of 0.3 ± 0.0005% and a test temperature of 20 °C.
