Y Open Cup Flash Point Test is performed with an open Sample Cup with the liquid sample being exposed to the air outside the Sample Cup and the outside environment. The sample inside the Sample Cup is heated gradually and simultaneously an Ignition Source continuously emits sparks above the surface of the liquid sample trying to ignite the sample inside the Sample Cup. After the sample inside the Sample Cup reaches a certain temperature the sparks of the Ignition Source ignite the sample. This temperature is the Open Cup Flash Point.
Y Pwynt fflach is the lowest temperature at which a liquid sample vaporizes to form an ignitable mixture with air. After reaching the Flash Point and after the ignition of the liquid sample the liquid sample and the vapor may continue to burn even without the ignition source being present or active any longer.
