- BS 3900
Handheld Viscometer QPI‑HRV1800 - Features:
1. Purpose of the Test
The procedure determines the viscosity of paints, coatings, and similar liquid materials using the handheld viscometer QPI‑HRV1800. The instrument evaluates the resistance of the sample to rotational movement and converts this resistance into dynamic viscosity (dPa·s) depending on the selected mode.
2. Equipment and Preparation
Handheld Viscometer QPI‑HRV1800 with rotor installed
Clean sample container (flat-bottom, compatible diameter)
Conditioned sample at the required test temperature
Lint‑free wipes for cleaning the rotor
Calibration reference fluid (optional for verification)
Before testing:
Ensure the rotor is clean and free of dried coating.
Verify the battery level or connect external power.
Allow the sample to reach the specified temperature (typically 25 ± 0.5 °C unless otherwise required).
Gently stir the sample to remove gradients without introducing air bubbles.
3. Instrument Setup
Power on the QPI‑HRV1800.
Select the measurement mode on the display.
Confirm the correct rotor number is shown.
Zero the instrument if prompted.
Hold the viscometer vertically above the sample container.
The device automatically stabilizes its internal reference before measurement.
4. Test Procedure
Step 1 — Immerse the Rotor
Lower the rotor into the sample until the immersion mark is fully submerged. Avoid touching the container walls to prevent mechanical interference.
Step 2 — Start the Measurement
Press START. The QPI‑HRV1800 begins rotating the rotor at the controlled speed defined by the Stormer method.
Step 3 — Stabilization Phase
The instrument measures:
torque resistance
rotational drag
dynamic load on the rotor
The microcontroller filters noise and stabilizes the reading. The stabilization typically takes 5 - 10 seconds depending on sample viscosity.
Step 4 — Reading the Result
Once stable, the display shows:
Viscosity value
Rotor number
Temperature (if the model includes the sensor)
Record the viscosity value as the primary result for ASTM‑style reporting.
Step 5 — End the Test
Lift the instrument straight upward to avoid splashing. Press STOP. Clean the rotor immediately using a lint‑free wipe and appropriate solvent.
5. Calculations and Reporting
The QPI‑HRV1800 performs all conversions internally. For ASTM‑style documentation, report:
Sample identification
Test temperature
Rotor number
Sample viscosity in dPa·s
Any deviations from standard conditions
6. Quality Control Notes
Ensure the sample is homogeneous and bubble‑free.
Re‑measure if the reading fluctuates more than ±0.2.
Verify calibration weekly using reference fluids.
Maintain consistent container geometry for repeatability.
7. Safety and Handling
Use gloves and eye protection when working with solvent‑based coatings. Dispose of cleaning solvents according to local regulations.
