Product Description:

Qualtech Products Industry Automatic Paint Shear Thinning Viscometer QPI‑RVE200 is a precision instrument engineered for automatic measurement of relative viscosity and shear‑thinning behavior in paints, varnishes, and coating formulations. Designed for production control, R&D, and quality assurance, this viscometer delivers instant, repeatable viscosity data at the touch of a button.

Relative viscosity is a key performance parameter describing the flow behavior of fluids under defined shear conditions. It expresses the ratio between a sample’s viscosity and that of a reference fluid—typically water or solvent—at identical temperature and speed. This comparative measurement provides a fast, reliable indication of coating consistency and thinning response without the complexity of absolute viscosity testing.

Precision Engineering & Automated Operation

The QPI‑RVE200 combines advanced microchip control with a large color touchscreen interface for intuitive operation and real‑time data visualization. Its fully automated measurement system performs sample analysis under three defined shear rates (20 s⁻¹, 44 s⁻¹, 200 s⁻¹), simulating real‑world application conditions such as brushing, rolling, or spraying.

Three precision‑machined Ball & Disc Spindles cover a wide viscosity range:

  • Precision Engineered Disc Spindle Nr 1: Max 2,200 mPas - Typical Shear Rate ≈ 200 s⁻¹
  • Precision Engineered Ball Spindle Nr 2: Max 7,500 mPas - Typical Shear Rate ≈ 44 s⁻¹
  • Precision Engineered Ball Spindle Nr 3: Max 35,000 mPa - Typical Shear Rate ≈ 20 s⁻¹
Each spindle is precision‑balanced and manufactured from stainless steel and brass alloys for long‑term stability and reproducible shear performance.

Measurement Programs & Data Handling

  • Manual Mode – continuous measurement for process monitoring

  • Timer Mode – automatic data capture over a defined interval

  • Maximum Viscosity Mode – records peak viscosity during shear conditioning

The instrument includes a 250 mL stainless steel sample cup compliant with ISO 2884‑2 and BS 3900 A7 dimensional requirements.

This professional Automatic Paint Shear Thinning Viscometer is designed and engineered in accordance with international test standards including:

ASTM Test Method Description - Mechanical Shear Conditioning Using the Automatic Paint Shear Thinning Viscometer QPI‑REV200:

The ASTM mechanical shear conditioning procedure describes how paints, varnishes, and coating materials are prepared and evaluated under controlled rotational shear before viscosity measurement. The Automatic Paint Shear Thinning Viscometer QPI‑REV200 automates this process, delivering repeatable shear‑thinning data at defined shear rates.

Technical Principle

ASTM coating standards (e.g., ASTM D1084, ASTM D4212, ASTM D823) specify that viscosity must be measured after controlled mechanical shear, because coatings often exhibit thixotropy and shear‑dependent flow behavior.

The QPI‑REV200 applies rotational shear through disc and ball spindles, simulating real application forces such as brushing, rolling, or spraying.

ASTM Procedure Using QPI‑REV200

1. Sample Conditioning

  • Bring the coating to the ASTM‑specified temperature (commonly 23 ± 0.5 °C).

  • Fill the 250 mL standard sample container to the immersion mark.

2. Instrument Configuration

  • Select the appropriate spindle (disc, large ball, small ball) based on viscosity range.

  • Choose the ASTM‑aligned shear rate:

    • 200 s⁻¹ (disc spindle)

    • 44 s⁻¹ (large ball spindle)

    • 20 s⁻¹ (small ball spindle)

3. Mechanical Shear Conditioning

  • The QPI‑REV200 rotates the spindle at a controlled speed.

  • The coating undergoes defined mechanical shear, breaking thixotropic structure and stabilizing flow behavior.

  • The torque sensor continuously measures resistance and converts it to viscosity.

4. Viscosity Measurement

  • Viscosity is displayed in real time on the touchscreen.

  • Engineers can record viscosity at each shear rate or monitor viscosity reduction over time.

  • The instrument supports Manual, Timer, and Maximum‑Value modes for ASTM‑style data capture.

5. Reporting

  • Report viscosity in mPa·s or Pa·s.

  • Document spindle type, rotational speed, shear rate, temperature, and sample identification.

  • ASTM requires noting any deviations from standard conditions.

Engineering Purpose

ASTM shear‑conditioning ensures that viscosity reflects real application behavior, not static storage viscosity. The QPI‑REV200 provides high‑precision, operator‑independent shear conditioning, ideal for production QC, R&D, and formulation optimization.

ISO Test Method Description - ISO 2884-2 Relative Viscosity Measurement Using Disc or Ball Spindles

The ISO 2884‑2 standard defines a controlled method for determining the relative viscosity of paints and varnishes using rotational viscometers equipped with disc or ball spindles. The QPI‑REV200 is fully compliant with ISO 2884‑2 and automates spindle selection, speed control, and data acquisition.

Technical Principle

ISO 2884‑2 focuses on relative viscosity, comparing the sample’s viscosity to a reference fluid under identical conditions. This method is widely used for production control, batch comparison, and shear‑thinning evaluation.

The QPI‑REV200 provides the required constant rotational speed, defined shear rates, and precision spindle geometry.

ISO Procedure Using QPI‑REV200

1. Sample Preparation

  • Condition the sample at ISO‑specified temperature and humidity.

  • Ensure the coating is homogeneous and free of entrapped air.

2. Instrument Setup

  • Select the ISO‑defined spindle type:

    • Disc spindle for low‑viscosity coatings

    • Large ball spindle for medium‑viscosity materials

    • Small ball spindle for high‑viscosity or thixotropic coatings

  • Set the rotational speed corresponding to the required shear rate.

3. Measurement Execution

  • The spindle rotates at a constant speed inside the coating.

  • The QPI‑REV200 measures torque and calculates viscosity continuously.

  • Real‑time viscosity is displayed on the color touchscreen.

4. Data Evaluation

  • Record viscosity at each shear rate.

  • Compare relative viscosity values between batches or reference materials.

  • Evaluate shear‑thinning behavior and flow stability.

5. Reporting

  • Report viscosity in Pa·s or mPa·s.

  • Include spindle type, rotational speed, shear rate, temperature, and sample conditioning details.

  • ISO requires noting any anomalies or deviations.

Engineering Purpose

ISO 2884‑2 ensures global comparability of viscosity data across laboratories and production sites. The QPI‑REV200 delivers repeatable, standard‑aligned measurements, ideal for coatings manufacturers, QC labs, and certification environments.
