Portable Viscometer QPI‑PRV3800 - Application:
1. Purpose and Scope
This procedure describes how to determine the dynamic viscosity in centipoise (cP) for paints, coatings, oils, and other Newtonian or near‑Newtonian fluids using the Portable Viscometer QPI‑PRV3800. The method follows the general principles of digital rotational viscometry, adapted for portable field and laboratory use.
2. Equipment and Materials
Portable Viscometer QPI‑PRV3800 with calibrated spindle
Stainless‑steel sample cup with smooth interior and defined geometry
Temperature‑controlled environment (recommended: 25 ± 0.5 °C)
Lint‑free wipes and compatible cleaning solvent
Certified reference viscosity fluid (optional, for calibration verification)
3. Preparation
Inspect the QPI‑PRV3800 to ensure the spindle rotates freely and is free of residue.
If required, verify calibration using a certified reference fluid.
Bring the test sample to the specified temperature and allow it to equilibrate.
Mix the sample gently to eliminate gradients without introducing air bubbles.
Fill the stainless‑steel cup to the immersion mark corresponding to the selected spindle.
4. Instrument Preparation
Power on the Portable Viscometer QPI‑PRV3800.
Select the cP measurement mode.
Confirm the correct spindle type and rotational speed.
Zero the instrument if prompted.
Hold the viscometer vertically above the prepared sample cup.
5. Test Procedure
Step 1 — Immersion
Lower the spindle into the sample until the immersion mark is fully submerged. Ensure the spindle does not touch the cup walls or bottom.
Step 2 — Measurement
Press START. The QPI‑PRV3800 rotates the spindle at a controlled speed. The internal torque sensor measures resistance to rotation, which is converted into dynamic viscosity (cP).
Step 3 — Stabilization
Allow the reading to stabilize, typically within 5–10 seconds. The instrument’s microcontroller filters transient torque variations and calculates a steady‑state viscosity value.
Step 4 — Reading
Record the following:
Viscosity (cP)
Spindle type and rotational speed
Sample temperature
Any deviations from standard test conditions
Step 5 — Completion
Lift the viscometer vertically to avoid splashing. Press STOP. Clean the spindle immediately using solvent and lint‑free wipes.
6. Calculations and Reporting
The QPI‑PRV3800 automatically converts torque to viscosity using internal calibration constants. For reporting, document:
Sample identification
Test temperature
Spindle type and speed
Measured viscosity (cP)
Optional: density or shear‑rate information if required by the test specification
7. Quality Control
Repeat measurements if variation exceeds ±0.5 % of the mean value.
Verify calibration weekly using certified reference fluids.
Maintain consistent cup geometry, fill height, and immersion depth for reproducibility.
8. Safety and Handling
Wear gloves and eye protection when handling solvent‑based materials. Dispose of cleaning agents according to local regulations.
9. Notes
This procedure provides a portable adaptation of digital rotational viscometry. The QPI‑PRV3800’s torque sensor and temperature compensation enable accurate viscosity measurement in both laboratory and field environments.
