Setor de Produtos Qualtech Volumímetro Scott é uma precisão Bulk Density Measurement Instrument para determinar o Bulk Density e o Apparent Density of loose sample products and loose sample materials including powders, granules and related sample materials.

Para medir o Bulk Density e o Apparent Density the sample is added into the specified funnel. The sample in the funnel passes through an integrated specified wire screen and a cylinder with a specified volume. After the sample passes through the lower funnel the density is measured with a Density Cup and calculated by dividing the mass of the sample by the known volume of the cylinder.

Este profissional Volumímetro Scott is precision engineered and is available with a wide range of Wire Screens, Sieves and Mesh to meet recognized test standards. The tilt panels are available in Glass or Stainless Steel.

This Scott Apparent Bulk Density Tester is engineered for three different main test applications:

  • Metal Powder Volumeter: Ideal to measure the density of metal powders and related powder  materials with a specified Mesh inside the upper funnel combined with a 25cc density cup
  • Paint Pigment Volumeter: Ideal to measure the density of paint pigments and related powder materials with a specified Mesh combined with a 1″ measurement cup.
  • Pharmaceutical Volumeter: Ideal to measure the density of crystalline powders and related powder material with a specified Mesh combined with a 25cc density cup.

ASTM B329 – Apparent Density of Metal Powders Using the Scott Volumeter

ASTM B329 defines a standardized procedure for determining the apparent density of metal powders using the Scott Volumeter, a precision instrument designed to create a reproducible packing condition. The method is based on the principle that powder passing through a series of four baffle plates and a standardized square funnel will settle into a receiving cup with a consistent packing structure, minimizing operator‑dependent variability.

The test begins by allowing a free‑flowing metal powder to discharge through the Scott Volumeter’s baffle system under gravity. As the powder cascades through the baffles, particle orientation, velocity, and packing behavior become standardized. The powder then fills a 25cm³ receiving cup of fixed geometry. After leveling the excess material, the mass of the filled cup is measured using a laboratory balance.

O apparent density (g/cm³) is calculated as the mass of powder divided by the known 25 cm³ volume. This value provides insight into particle morphology, surface texture, flowability, and packing efficiency - all critical parameters in powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing feedstock qualification, and sintering behavior prediction.

ASTM B329 is widely used for quality control, batch comparison, supplier qualification, and material specification compliance.

 

ISO 3923‑2 – Metallic Powders: Determination of Apparent Density Using the Scott Volumeter

ISO 3923‑2 is the international equivalent to ASTM B329 and specifies the determination of apparent density for metallic powders using the Scott Volumeter method. The standard ensures global consistency in powder characterization by defining strict dimensional tolerances for the funnel, baffle plates, and receiving cup, as well as environmental and procedural controls.

In this method, the powder flows through a multi‑stage baffle assembly designed to break agglomerates, reduce particle momentum, and promote uniform packing. The geometry of the baffles and the funnel ensures that powders with different particle shapes — spherical, irregular, dendritic, or sponge‑like — settle in a reproducible manner.

The powder fills a 25 cm³ Density Cup, which is then leveled and weighed. The resulting apparent density reflects the powder’s ability to pack under low‑energy conditions, making it a sensitive indicator of:

  • particle size distribution
  • particle shape and surface roughness
  • internal porosity
  • flowability and cohesiveness
  • powder conditioning or degradation

ISO 3923‑2 is used extensively in international supply chains, research laboratories and industries where powder performance directly affects process stability including MIM, PM compaction, AM powder bed fusion and thermal spray feedstock evaluation.
